Student Experiences at Mullin’s Ice-Cream
This summer, two Food students from the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) at Loughry Campus are gaining vital industry experience at Mullin’s Ice-Cream in Kilrea. Currently in the middle of their two-year programs, Ritchie McBride and Sarah Watton are immersed in the full production process of Mullin’s acclaimed ice cream, from ingredient intake to packaging.
Ritchie McBride, from Articlave, recently completed a 12-week placement as part of his Level 3 Extended Diploma in Food Technology and Nutrition. He noted that the experience brought his classroom learning to life, significantly enhancing his understanding of dairy science and technology. Throughout his placement, Ritchie engaged in producing and packing a variety of products, while also conducting quality checks and internal audits.
Sarah Watton, from Mosside, is completing her placement in line with her Foundation Degree in Food Innovation and Technology. She quickly adapted to her role and shared insights about the pasteurization process, remarking on the value of seeing how commercial operations function. Sarah’s responsibilities include quality checks and organizing samples for microbiological testing, and she feels her skills from the practical sessions at CAFRE are translating into real value for the workforce.
CAFRE’s programs aim to equip students with industry-relevant skills, fostering successful careers in the agri-food sector. Recently, the college has updated its food degree offerings to include a BSc (Hons) Degree in Food Innovation Management, featuring pathways in Technology and Nutrition, and a BSc (Hons) Degree in Sustainable Agri-Food Management, both validated by Ulster University.
For prospective students interested in pursuing a career in food, an Open Day will be held at Loughry Campus on Tuesday, October 7. This event invites those leaving school with GCSEs, A-Levels, or similar qualifications—as well as individuals considering a career change—to explore CAFRE’s full suite of Level 3, Apprenticeship, and Degree courses. To register for the Open Day, visit the events section on the CAFRE website.
