  • The company aims to achieve significant production milestones by 2028, integrating with partners to improve battery manufacturing capabilities.

Expansion of Innovative Battery Technology

South 8 Technologies, a San Diego-based battery startup, has announced a $9.2 million grant agreement under California’s PowerForward Battery Manufacturing program. This initiative is part of a broader $67 million California Energy Commission program, designed to foster zero-emission vehicle battery manufacturing within the state. The grant will support the expansion of South 8’s production capabilities for its LiGas® liquefied gas electrolyte.

LiGas technology replaces traditional liquid electrolytes with a specially developed blend of non-toxic gases held under pressure. This approach significantly enhances performance across a wider temperature range, functioning effectively from –60 °C to +60 °C, while conventional electrolytes exhibit weaknesses at 0 °C and freeze at –20 °C. South 8 has set ambitious goals, targeting a specific energy output exceeding 425 Wh/kg, making the technology particularly relevant for electric vehicles operating in cold climates and for defense and aerospace sectors where traditional battery cells typically fail.

The grant will allow South 8 to establish an annual production capacity of 100 MWh of LiGas electrolyte and 2 MWh of battery cells at its headquarters in San Diego. The cell manufacturing process will involve collaboration with Nanotech Energy, a strategic partner. South 8 is working towards being fully integrated with gigafactory standards for LiGas by 2028.

Jungwoo Lee, CEO of South 8 Technologies, expressed enthusiasm about scaling production, stating, “We’re excited to scale production of our advanced LiGas electrolyte and high-performance, resilient battery cells.” The company has garnered interest from various investors, particularly those with a focus on defense and extreme-environment scenarios, including Lockheed Martin Ventures, W. L. Gore & Associates, and Porsche Ventures. Additionally, South 8 has partnered with LG Energy Solution to explore aerospace battery applications.

This strategic expansion not only aligns with California’s mission to promote sustainable battery production but also positions South 8 as a key player in the evolving battery technology landscape. With a focus on resilience and performance, the company is poised to meet the growing demands of electric vehicle manufacturers and other high-performance sectors.
