Record-Breaking Trial Run

The 100 MW Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) project at Tangshan Haitai’s 1 GW Qiquanhu PV Industrial Park achieved a remarkable operational milestone during its recent trial run in April 2026. The facility ran continuously for 96 hours, safely generating more than 1 million kWh per day, as reported by solar field supplier Shouhang Hi-Tech.

Commencing its 72-hour trial operation on April 7, the project concluded successfully, meeting its goal of sustained full-load operation for over four hours. This achievement marks a significant step forward for CSP technology in China.

Located in Turpan City, Xinjiang, the 100 MW tower project is positioned as a core component of a larger 1 GW hybrid solar complex that integrates photovoltaic (PV) power. This combination enhances overall efficiency and stability while addressing renewable energy curtailment issues. Shouhang emphasized that this synergy represents a meaningful advancement toward developing a clean, low-carbon, and efficient energy system.

Tangshan Haitai, a high-tech entity listed on the Beijing Stock Exchange, is responsible for the adjacent 900 MW of PV production. Haitai Solar is recognized within the industry as a BloombergNEF Tier 1 module manufacturer.

The project was constructed by China Petroleum Engineering & Construction (CPECC Northwest), which holds a vice-chairman position at the China Solar Thermal Alliance (CSTA). The thermal energy storage system, capable of storing energy for 12 hours, was created by Bluestar (Beijing) Chemical Machinery, a Sinochem Holdings subsidiary, responsible for delivering 15 thermal storage systems for CSP projects in the past decade.

Shouhang HiTech, notable for its Urat Trough CSP project in Inner Mongolia that also set generation records, supplied crucial components for the Tangshan Haitai facility, including heliostats and receivers. The company recently extended its contributions to the China Three Gorges Renewables’ 100 MW tower CSP project in Golmud, Qinghai Province.

This successful trial underscores the potential for CSP technology to play a vital role in the global energy landscape, paving the way for more efficient, sustainable energy solutions in the future.
