Innovative Materials for High-Voltage Applications

SABIC has unveiled two advanced grades of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) compounds specifically designed for insulating high-voltage power modules, which include insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) switching devices essential for electric drive systems. The new compounds, designated as LNP THERMOCOMP OFM76XXP and OFM76EXP, are engineered to withstand the demands of power modules used in 800 V and above traction inverters, fast charging systems, and renewable energy solutions.

Both compounds achieve the highest Comparative Tracking Index (CTI) designation, PLC 0, which indicates excellent performance in electrical insulation. They also exhibit strong dielectric strength and meet UL94 V0 flame retardancy standards at a thickness of just 0.4 mm. SABIC reports that after enduring 1,000 hours of heat aging at 200° C, these compounds retain 90% of their strength and insulation capabilities. Compared to traditional materials such as polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and polyphthalamide (PPA), their dimensional stability and resistance to thermal shock are markedly improved, allowing for the production of thinner and lighter components. Notably, the compounds can be molded in white or lighter colors, ensuring visibility for QR codes printed on the IGBTs.

The unique properties of PPS resins, which can withstand continuous heat and resist tracking, are particularly relevant in 800 V power electronic applications, where increased voltage and compact packaging place significant stress on insulating materials. The enhanced OFM76EXP grade offers additional features such as superior laser-marking capabilities, effective adhesion to silicone-based sealants, and excellent crack resistance, boasting the highest impact strength among similar materials.

Beyond insulation for IGBT module base plates, these new grades show promise for further applications, including in DC power transmission systems, high-voltage inverters, and renewable energy infrastructure. SABIC markets both products globally and anticipates strong demand across various sectors.
