With a budget of 95.3 billion won, this five-year project aims to develop on-device AI semiconductors specifically for integration into UAV systems. KAI will manage the entire project, focusing on developing, integrating, and validating high-speed expendable UAVs and an Autonomous Control System (ACS). Domestic fabless companies will manufacture the AI semiconductors, while Samsung Electronics will handle semiconductor contract production.

The initiative involves collaboration with various players in the domestic semiconductor ecosystem, aiming to localize defense semiconductor production that has largely depended on imports. This project is expected to create new opportunities for domestic fabless companies and AI developers to enter the defense market effectively.

The technology developed will also be integrated into KAI’s advanced AI pilot, known as “K-AILOT.” This pilot will enable the autonomous control of UAVs by processing and analyzing large-scale data in real time, with AI semiconductors forming the core of this system. Additionally, KAI plans to expand the application of their AI technology to satellites, allowing for real-time processing of combat data collected from reconnaissance missions directly onboard the satellites.

KAI envisions a phased realization of a Hyper Connected Battlespace, which will integrate air (manned and unmanned aircraft), space (satellites), and ground forces through the use of domestically produced AI semiconductors and robust communication networks. A KAI representative highlighted the significance of this project, stating that it represents a global shift towards automating weapon systems and will be a crucial milestone in securing South Korean sovereignty in AI and defense technologies.
