Vice President Highlights Automobile Sector’s Role at NADA Auto Show

Vice President Ram Sahaya Prasad Yadav inaugurated the 18th NADA Auto Show 2026 in Kathmandu, touting the automobile sector as a vital component of Nepal’s economy. He stated that the sector should transition from fossil fuel to electric vehicles, highlighting the importance of generating local entrepreneurship and production capabilities.

Yadav urged the Nepal Automobile Dealers’ Association (NADA) to craft an effective roadmap for economic advancement and to connect the Nepali automobile industry with international markets. He underscored the need for collaboration between the government and the private sector to enhance infrastructure, particularly for electric vehicle charging stations.

Anjan Shrestha, President of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the economic significance of the automobile sector. Last year, the sector contributed Rs 81 billion to state revenue, accounting for approximately 8-9% of total earnings. He noted that the sector should not be viewed merely as a luxury, but rather as a key area for job creation and local assembly of vehicles and parts.

However, FNCCI President Shrestha also highlighted challenges in domestic production, calling for the development of homegrown industries to alleviate reliance on imports. Meanwhile, NADA President Surendra Kumar Upreti pointed out the current lack of suitable infrastructure for large exhibitions in Nepal, particularly at the Bhrikutimandap exhibition ground. He stressed the need for an international-level venue to accommodate expanding economic activities.

Upreti further indicated that with the growing trend toward electric vehicles, there must be clearer policies and incentives for establishing charging infrastructure and local vehicle assembly. The NADA Auto Show, which runs until September 9 and celebrates NADA’s 50th anniversary, is themed “From Industry to Employment,” highlighting the sector’s potential for job creation and economic growth.
