New Defense Facility Takes Shape in Pueblo County

Construction has commenced on a significant space and defense technology facility in Pueblo County, spearheaded by Denver-based Voyager Technologies. Set to occupy the site of the former U.S. Army Pueblo Chemical Depot, which closed recently, this 150,000-square-foot complex aims to bolster the local economy and national defense capabilities.

The facility is expected to generate approximately 120 new jobs and will focus on the high-volume production of essential components for weapon systems and propulsion systems. Voyager Technologies has received over $39 million in federal funding, aimed at re-establishing these vital resources within the United States.

U.S. Congressman Jeff Hurd emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “This groundbreaking represents one of the largest defense investments in Southern Colorado in over a decade.” He noted that the establishment of this facility will not only enhance job opportunities in Pueblo but also strengthen the defense industrial base within Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District.

Before acquiring the Pueblo site, Voyager Technologies already had a workforce of about 60 employees in Southern Colorado. The acquisition of this location was part of the company’s purchase of Estes Energetics, based in Penrose, in November. Estes Energetics specializes in propulsion systems and materials and is connected to the well-known model rocketry company, Estes Rockets.

Voyager Technologies operates additional sites across the U.S., including California, Ohio, Nevada, Texas, and even Italy, underscoring its expansive reach in the defense and technology sectors.

The new facility is anticipated to be operational later this year, setting the stage for a more robust defense strategy and increased manufacturing capabilities in the region. This marks a pivotal step in onshore manufacturing and support for national defense efforts.
