Technological Advancements in Defence

In celebration of National Technology Day, IIT Bhubaneswar organized a prominent lecture titled “Futuristic Defence Technologies: India towards becoming a World Leader.” Dr. Binay Kumar Das, the Director General of Electronics and Communication Systems at DRDO, provided valuable insights into India’s readiness for future warfare through technological innovation.

Dr. Das explained that many technological advancements find their roots in military applications before transitioning to civilian use. He presented a range of emerging defence technologies, such as AI-driven situational awareness, autonomous systems, robotic soldiers, hypersonic weapons, quantum sensing, and the concept of digital battlefields. Dr. Das also discussed India’s self-reliance initiatives, including the Defence Innovation Accelerator for the Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE), collaboration with startups, and the Defense Research and Development Organisation’s Technology Development Fund (TDF), all aimed at establishing India as a leader in global defence innovation.

Prof. Shreepad Karmalkar, the Director of IIT Bhubaneswar, acknowledged India’s progress in software and systems technologies but pointed out the necessity of strengthening component-level technologies, particularly in materials science, to achieve global technological leadership. Prof. Damodar Acharya, former Director of IIT Kharagpur and current Chairman of the INAE Bhubaneswar Chapter, emphasized the importance of expert lectures in enriching the technological dialogue as India increasingly asserts its scientific presence on the global stage.
