One of the key innovations is the Helios mobile sensor system, which can be delivered to locations like Vandenberg Space Force Base in under 24 hours. It offers rapid deployment capabilities and can set up within 15 minutes, providing ongoing surveillance in critical areas. This is complemented by the Lander platform, which powers and connects sensors in remote locations, ensuring reliability in harsh conditions.

Zane Mountcastle, CEO of Picogrid, emphasized the need for a unified view of emergency operations, explaining that their platform consolidates data from various sensors to be shared through open application programming interfaces (APIs). This approach facilitates access to real-time information for federal agencies and local responders, enhancing coordination during wildfire events.

The STTR and Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) programs, implemented by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), aim to fast-track small business innovations for the military. Since 2018, the “Open Topic” program has broadened the range of technologies eligible for funding. The collaboration with Picogrid and MIT reflects an ongoing effort to strengthen national defense through adaptable and innovative technology solutions.
