DeHaat Expands Market Reach with AgriCentral Acquisition

Online agribusiness marketplace DeHaat has successfully acquired the farm advisory platform AgriCentral through a business transfer agreement, although the financial specifics of the deal remain undisclosed. This acquisition comes as AgriCentral, supported by Olam International, stands as one of the leading advisory platforms for farmers in India. The integration will allow DeHaat to extend its services to over 12 million smallholder farmers across the country.

Shashank Kumar, cofounder and CEO of DeHaat, emphasized the synergy between the two platforms. He stated that “AgriCentral’s cost-efficient digital capabilities will complement us in reaching out to millions of underserved farmers.” The aim is to provide these farmers with a comprehensive range of services, including precision advisory, mechanization, insurance, and cattle advisory, all designed to enhance their livelihoods.

For over 12 years, DeHaat has been committed to developing its agribusiness marketplace into a holistic solution for farmers. Currently, the platform operates more than 15,000 “DeHaat Centres,” which serve as franchise facilities in rural markets. By collaborating with over 1,000 input manufacturers, produce buyers, storage operators, and financial institutions, DeHaat now supports farmers in 12 Indian states and more than 120,000 villages.

Smallholder farmers, who represent about 80% of India’s agricultural sector and typically manage less than two hectares of land, face significant challenges. These farmers often experience unreliable access to essential supplies and financial resources, frequently falling victim to middlemen who distort fair pricing. Digital agribusiness platforms like DeHaat aim to alleviate these issues by harnessing technology to connect farmers directly with market resources.

In pursuit of innovation, DeHaat expanded its offerings in 2023 by partnering with Global BioAg Innovation and Aussan Laboratorie, enhancing its product line with biological inputs. Furthermore, the company launched its consumer brand, Honest Farms, in 2024, presenting a range of rice, spices, and staples via e-commerce platforms throughout India.

The acquisition of AgriCentral not only diversifies DeHaat’s toolkit but also incorporates advanced technologies such as satellite imagery, machine learning, and big data analytics to deliver personalized advice to farmers. This includes insights on crop care, real-time market pricing, and comprehensive crop calendars. AgriCentral currently claims over 10 million users, significantly bolstering DeHaat’s existing network and putting the company on track to quadruple its farmer reach by 2024.

This strategic acquisition aligns with DeHaat’s mission to empower smallholder farmers and build a sustainable agricultural ecosystem in India, ultimately improving food security and rural livelihoods.
