Senior assistant director of the Johor Education Department, Abdul Karim Masiran, highlighted the importance of smart farming in exposing students to potential STEM careers. He explained that such projects allow students to apply classroom knowledge, fostering essential skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, and technical expertise. The greenhouse is designed to accommodate up to 2,000 plants, growing vegetables like pak choy, salad greens, and spinach, which can be harvested within four to six weeks.

Abdul Karim noted that data-driven farming enables students and teachers to monitor crop health, including soil pH levels and temperature, from remote locations. School principal Siti Norbayah Jema’at emphasized the opportunity for students to engage in hands-on learning outside of traditional classrooms.

Siti Norbayah explained that the students participate in every step of the process, from sowing seeds to marketing and managing customer orders. This practical involvement gives them insights into business operations, significantly boosting their confidence. The vegetables are sold through a pre-order system, promoting the products a week before harvest. Support from parents and the local community has been notable, contributing to successful sales.

The income generated from the vegetable sales is reinvested into future crop cycles and related educational activities. The project is sponsored by Yayasan Johor Corporation as part of its Smart Farming Greenhouse: Sustainable School – STEM Programme. This initiative not only nurtures agricultural skills but also prepares students for future challenges regarding food security and sustainability, fostering a sense of responsibility towards the environment and society.
