Chilled Drinking Water Initiative Overview

The City of Phoenix has been recognized as a finalist in the 2025 IDC Smart Cities North America Awards for its Chilled Drinking Water in Public Spaces Initiative. This program, launched in January 2025, addresses the growing demand for chilled drinking water in high-density urban areas, particularly for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transit users.

In collaboration with Downtown Phoenix, Inc., the initiative features three custom-designed smart drinking water stations equipped with bottle fillers. These stations are conveniently located at the entrance of Phoenix City Hall, near the City Council Chambers, and along the Sonoran Bicycle pathway close to Roosevelt Street and Third Avenue. The stations utilize heat-mitigating technologies to withstand extreme summer conditions, as well as remote-sensing devices that monitor water usage daily, ensuring efficient operation and leak detection.

Since its implementation, the three water stations have collectively dispensed over 116,000 standard-sized bottles of water, significantly reducing reliance on single-use plastic. This effort represents a crucial step toward creating a more sustainable and environmentally friendly urban landscape.

Ruthbea Yesner, vice president of IDC Government Insights, emphasized the commitment of organizations across North America to innovate services for their communities, enhancing experiences in public sectors. She reflected on the increasing sophistication of technologies and projects aimed at building smart cities and congratulated all applicants for their contributions.

Winners of the IDC Smart Cities North America Awards will be announced during the Smart Cities Connect conference, scheduled to take place in San Antonio, Texas, from April 14 to 16, 2025.
